Putting aside modern construction appliances and reverting to techniques 2000 years old, six professionals of the building trade face what may possibly be the most gruelling challenge of their careers- to build a replica of a Roman Villa, and doing it by strictly adhering to the technological restrictions of the Romans themselves. With this task in hand, they are soon to realise that the feats of ancient Roman development are far from easily achievable.
Building the Villa
Masterminded by a hard-nosed historian, the operation is led on the ground floor by the reputable owner of a modern day construction company, whose stern leadership techniques give the labourers (consisting of a plumber, plasterer, labourer, carpenter and a brick layer) more than a run for their money. And the result is an ongoing endeavour, laced with trial and error, that puts the skills of these already experienced tradesman to the test.
Modern wheelbarrows are replaced with rudimentary hand crafted wooden carts, brickwork is created from reserves of sandstone broken individually with copious hammering, and lime mortar utilised in an underground furnace is the substitute for cement in a mixer.
With these ancient techniques put into further consideration, the labourers find themselves enduring an experience more invigorating than a mere aimless uphill struggle, as they learn ancient crafts, begin to understand the science of old Roman construction, and ultimately gain a new found respect for the gruelling work effort of Roman builders.
The latest episode saw the team of 6 being treated to an extra eye opener, as they are flown to Ephesus in Turkey, to visit one of the most well preserved ruins of Roman architecture in the world. As a result of this expedition, their enthusiasm and comprehension is taken to another level, and they return to their building site in Britain with a rejuvenated outlook. Though a whole stack of manual work is still to lie ahead of them.
An Ongoing Task
As the series progresses, these jovial, down to earth workers seem to gradually develop in character. And with their skills combined, viewers begin to witness the result of their intensive achievements, though the ongoing ups and downs keep the experience interesting and enjoyable to watch. Part documentary, part reality show, this clever hybrid of ideas mixes a candid view of an often coarse and undeniably humorous working environment with the progression of a truly remarkable feat. And viewers are given plenty of reasons to care with further keenness about the eventual and wholly impressive outcome.
This 6 part series is televised Thursday 9:00pm on Channel 4. The next episode is aired next week on the 3rd of February.
